Did you know the modern masters of the early 20th century were heavily influenced by the pandemic of 1918.  Yes, the design aesthetics of Alvar Alto, Le Corbusier and Richard Neutra included open air spaces, minimalist design, cornerless spaces and a pure white color pallet.  All of these design elements reduced contaminants in the air, on surfaces and in hard to clean areas.

Did you know that a cholera outbreak was stopped in it tracks by a change to the build enviornment? Did you also know that architecture and design continue to play a role in protecting public health?

Yes, in 1854 Dr John Snow removed the handle to the Broad Street pump in London, ending a cholera outbreak that killed over 600 Londoners in less than a week.  Snow believed that cholera was a water born disease and not air born, which was the common belief at the time.  After an exhaustive study of the spread of the disease, he concluded that the water from the Broad Street well which the neighborhood was drinking from, was contaminated by human waste seeping onto the well.  By removing the handle and putting the pump out of commission, he ended the outbreak.
Not only did this episode give birth to modern epidemiology, but also modern water supply and sanitation infrastructure.  Today municipalities spend millions of dollars to provide clean water and the safe disposal of  human waste.  Licensed Architects, engineers, and tradesmen bear the responsibility of providing a safe built environment.  Protecting the community from unseen hazards including, slip and falls, sewer gasses, mold, carbon monoxide, smoke and fire, radon, and other sick building syndrome contaminates.

Did you know that one of the greatest Architects of the Gilded Age was murdered on the roof of the Madison Square Garden over a salacious love triangle?

Learn more about the murder of Stanford White

Yes, Stanford White, a partner in the firm McKim Mead and White was murdered over an affair with a 16 year old starlet named Evelyn Nesbit.  Before his death in 1906 White designed numerous Mansions for the barons of the gilded age in Newport and the Berkshires.  His most recognizable construction is the arch in New York's Washington Square.  Evelyn Nesbit was an actress and model, considered the "it girl" of the late 19th century.  Evelyn's husband, Harry Thaw shot White to death during a performance at the Madison Square Garden, an building which White designed.  Thaw  had a history of mental instability and believed White raped Evelyn many years before.  The resulting trial was considered the trial of the century.  At lease until O.J. came along.

Learn more about depreciating housing in Japan

Did you know that in Japan "disposable" housing is the norm? A typical home is demolished after 22 years when it's value has depreciated to 0.

Yes, after world war II Japan needed to quickly and efficiently replace the buildings destroyed during the war in order to house an exploding population.  Like many countries, they turned to prefabricated housing.  Perhaps as a result of their homogeneous culture, this building process stuck and has become the standard today.  Today the Japanese companies Daiwa and Sekisui Heim are the largest housing companies in the world and even own subsidiaries in the United States.

Is prefabricated architecture and disposable architecting one and the same?  Prefabrication is becoming more and more popular in the building industry as a result of a shrinking labor force, and shorted construction schedules.  However, these buildings lack the character and quality of construction that makes buildings worth protecting and preserving.

Is the future of housing in this country headed toward the situation in Japan?  Or is american individualism to strong to allow our homes to become cookie cutter boxes?
