This mixed-use renovation entailed working with a developer to create a façade that fit with the architecture of the neighborhood to achieve approval of preservation and community groups. The existing single story commercial building was expanded to include two floors of condominiums above. The design called for the ground floor façade and frieze to be clad in metal. Stone headers and sills appointed the windows, while red brick filled out the façade.
Norwood Ave
The new owners of this 1909 arts and crafts foursquare wished to convert the century old building into a modern home. How to make this transformation without losing the charm of the home was the dilemma that drove the design. The simple arts and crafts style complimented a modern aesthetic that brought with it updated functions. The existing antique pine doors, trim and floors were refurbished and a new palette of modern natural material were use to bring a new and contemporary feel to the space.
Prescott
This third floor addition to an industrial building in a historic Boston neighborhood required a sensitive design that complimented the surrounding 19th century architecture. The simple modern box is clad with a fiber cement rain screen and metal trim. The simple detailing draws attention to the function and construction of each architectural element.
The design was able to overcome the obstacle of satisfying the historic commission as well as neighbors concerns regarding shadows and shading. The addition includes a master suite, guest bedroom, new interior stair and laundry. Glass wood and metal can be found through out the project.
Located at the top of Mount Vernon Street on Boston’s Beacon Hill, this penthouse apartment needed to be reconfiguring to better utilize the space and location. A new Master bedroom and bathroom were located on the top floor to take advantage of the out door space and views. The first floor living area and kitchen were reconfigured into an open plan that included a dining area.
A custom island that incorporated the required storage was designed to divide the dining space and kitchen. Upper cabinets with two sided glass doors allow light to permeate throughout the space. Italian marble and updated millwork finish out the space
